Peace Be With You

Today is the International Day of Peace, and our thoughts are with Monica Willard as she continues her long-time work at the United Nations to build a world of peace. In honor of the day I offer this prayer for peace–the author is anonymous, but is attributed to the Phillipines.

Grant Us Peace

Grant us peace that will

BREAK our silence in the midst of violence

then prophetic voices shall resonate

Grant us peace that will

PULL US DOWN from the steeple of our pride

then we'll learn to wash each other's feet

Grant us peace that will

EMPTY us of hate and intolerance

then we'll turn guns into guitars and sing

Grant us peace that will

SHUT our mouths up when we speak too much

then we'll learn to listen and understand what others are saying

Grant us peace that will

DISTURB us in our apathy

then we'll dance together under the sun

Grant us peace that will

BURN our lethargic hearts

then we'll endure burning and let love and justice glow

See you in church,
Pastor Mark

Sunday Church School

Our Sunday church school classes have resumed sessions for the fall, Thanks to Rhea Ebanks who is our teacher this month for the primary class. Be sure to register your child with director Ron Rudaitis.

Pastor's Book Group

The Pastor's Book Group will meet on Wednesday, September 26, 7:30 PM, at Eileen and Bruce Rosenzweig's home. Our book for the month is a powerful story of a woman confronting torn between her past and future– “Three Daughters of Eve,” by Elif Shafak.

From the publisher:

Peri, a married, wealthy, beautiful Turkish woman, is on her way to a dinner party at a seaside mansion in Istanbul when a beggar snatches her handbag. As she wrestles to get it back, a photograph falls to the ground–an old polaroid of three young women and their university professor. A relic from a past–and a love–Peri had tried desperately to forget.

Three Daughters of Eve is set over an evening in contemporary Istanbul, as Peri arrives at the party and navigates the tensions that simmer in this crossroads country between East and West, religious and secular, rich and poor. Over the course of the dinner, and amidst an opulence that is surely ill-begotten, terrorist attacks occur across the city. Competing in Peri’s mind however are the memories invoked by her almost-lost polaroid, of the time years earlier when she was sent abroad for the first time, to attend Oxford University. As a young woman there, she had become friends with the charming, adventurous Shirin, a fully assimilated Iranian girl, and Mona, a devout Egyptian-American. Their arguments about Islam and feminism find focus in the charismatic but controversial Professor Azur, who teaches divinity, but in unorthodox ways. As the terrorist attacks come ever closer, Peri is moved to recall the scandal that tore them all apart.

Elif Shafak is the number one bestselling novelist in her native Turkey, and her work is translated and celebrated around the world. In Three Daughters of Eve, she has given us a rich and moving story that humanizes and personalizes one of the most profound sea changes of the modern world.

A yoga class is being offered to all adult church members on Tuesdays from 4:00-5:00 pm in the Sanctuary. Bonnie and Kristin bring their long-standing love of yoga and their instructor Marie Cruz to the CCH community. Yoga offers many positive benefits to the body, mind and spirit through the practice of meditation and mindfulness. As another busy holiday season approaches, yoga can help us find the balance we all  seek. The class is $20.00 per session. For more details call Bonnie or Kristin at 516.922.9525 or Sue at the Church office.

Joys and Concerns

Our prayers with Monica Willlard on the passing of her brother, Mike Burke. We prayer for God's embrace of her and her family in their mourning.

Thank you to Garden Volunteers!

The garden season is coming to an end and we want to thank all of our volunteers who helped with the church vegetable garden. We were able to deliver fresh veggies to the Northport Food Pantry most every week this summer. Special thanks to Alice Weiger who once again spearheaded the planting of the vegies!

Volunteers Needed

Northport Food Pantry

We collect food for the Northport Food pantry each week at our church. Please place donations in the box by the church office.

Peace and Plenty Food Outreach:   Peace and Plenty is in need of plastic grocery bags to deliver their lunches each week. Bring any extra to the church. You are invited to help make sandwiches and prepare snacks for children in Huntington. Peace and Plenty will meets on Mondays at 6:30 PM. They are also in need of donations of lunch meats and cheeses, fruit and healthy snacks.

Cooks Needed for the Peace & Plenty program
We're looking for a few volunteers who can help us send the Tri CYA trays of
cooked food such as baked ziti, chicken and rice, pasta with meatballs or meat sauce, etc. Most children at the Tri CYA receive free breakfast and lunch at school during the school year and rely on the Tri CYA  for at least one nutritious meal. We try to support that effort with some substantial dishes, beyond sandwiches.  Some of the food may also be sent to individuals unable to get out to food pantries and living with food shortages. If you would like to help  please contact Anne:
