Dedicated Service

Dear Friends,

Last week I reported on changes in the church committees and equipment. This week I am reflecting on the most important part of the church–its members. I am truly blessed to work with such a dedicated and caring group of volunteers. This Sunday we will be recognizing many of our volunteers as we formally install our new officers and committee members to their roles and ordain three new Deacons–Kristin Harper, Maddie Swicord and Linda Wright.

We see the commitment of our volunteers in the work of these elected members, in our church school teachers, in our music people and in so many other places throughout the church. One example of this dedication happened a few weeks ago on a particularly bad weather Sunday. I think it was also a vacation weekend and so we had very low church attendance. There were 12 people in the congregation. What was amazing was that all the choir members came to church–we had more in the choir than in the congregation. I was really preaching to the choir that day.

Our congregational volunteers not only make it possible to share God's love at 30 Washington Drive, but I hope they also find a meaning and joy in their service. It is indeed the best gift to be able to give to another. To all you who give of your time to this church I say, "Thank you," and may you be blessed by your service.

See you in church,
Pastor Mark

Bring Your Soles to Church

The CCH Outreach Miniistry is conducting our annual shoe drive March 1-31,2018.  Used and new shoes of any kind (yes, high heals, boots and single shoes) can be dropped off at the church until Palm Sunday. Please tie together pairs of shoes.

The World Bank estimates that approximately 400 million children worldwide – more than the entire U.S. population – live in pronounced poverty. Millions of these children will grow up never having had a pair of shoes, resulting in significant challenges for their health and wellbeing. Lacking proper footwear, countless children will not be able or permitted to attend school. And tens of millions of these poverty-stricken, barefoot boys and girls will be infected with soil-transmitted parasitic diseases like hookworm, causing lasting suffering and lifelong debilitation.

The shoes collected will be delivered to Soles4Souls, an international anti-poverty organization that distributes new and used shoes. A microenterprise program provides used shoes for repair to create jobs in poor countries. The organization has distributed more than 25 million shoes in well over 100 countries, over 2.7 million in 2017.

Pastor's Book Group

The April selection for the Pastor's Book Group is a novel that explores contemporary concerns about immigration as well as the inequality of wealth in our nation. “Behold the Dreamers,” by Imbolo Mbue is an Oprah book club selection that follows a recent Cameroonian immigrant who begins work as a chauffeur for a Lehman Brothers executive just before the crash of 2007. Because our normal book discussion date would fall on Holy Week we are skipping March and will hold the discussion group on Wednesday, April 25, at Eileen and Bruce Rosenzweig’s home.

From the Publisher: This critically acclaimed first novel follows Jende Jonga, a Cameroonian immigrant living in Harlem, has come to the United States to provide a better life for himself, his wife, Neni, and their six-year-old son. In the fall of 2007, Jende can hardly believe his luck when he lands a job as a chauffeur for Clark Edwards, a senior executive at Lehman Brothers. Clark demands punctuality, discretion, and loyalty—and Jende is eager to please. Clark’s wife, Cindy, even offers Neni temporary work at the Edwardses’ summer home in the Hamptons. With these opportunities, Jende and Neni can at last gain a foothold in America and imagine a brighter future.

However, the world of great power and privilege conceals troubling secrets, and soon Jende and Neni notice cracks in their employers’ façades. When the financial world is rocked by the collapse of Lehman Brothers, the Jongas are desperate to keep Jende’s job—even as their marriage threatens to fall apart. As all four lives are dramatically upended, Jende and Neni are forced to make an impossible choice.

A yoga class is being offered to all adult church members on Tuesdays from 4:00-5:00 pm in the Sanctuary. Bonnie and Kristin bring their long-standing love of yoga and their instructor Marie Cruz to the CCH community. Yoga offers many positive benefits to the body, mind and spirit through the practice of meditation and mindfulness. As another busy holiday season approaches, yoga can help us find the balance we all  seek. The class is $20.00 per session. For more details call Bonnie or Kristin at 516.922.9525 or Sue at the Church office.

Northport Food Pantry

We collect food for the Northport Food pantry each week at our church. Please place donations in the box by the church office.

Peace and Plenty Food Outreach:   Peace and Plenty is in need of plastic grocery bags to deliver their lunches each week. Bring any extra to the church. You are invited to help make sandwiches and prepare snacks for children in Huntington. Peace and Plenty will meets on Mondays at 6:30 PM. They are also in need of donations of lunch meats and cheeses, fruit and healthy snacks.

Cooks Needed for the Peace & Plenty program
We're looking for a few volunteers who can help us send the Tri CYA trays of
cooked food such as baked ziti, chicken and rice, pasta with meatballs or meat sauce, etc. Most children at the Tri CYA receive free breakfast and lunch at school during the school year and rely on the Tri CYA  for at least one nutritious meal. We try to support that effort with some substantial dishes, beyond sandwiches.  Some of the food may also be sent to individuals unable to get out to food pantries and living with food shortages. If you would like to help  please contact Anne:
