As the commemoration of the Last Supper, Maundy Thursday includes communion and the Tenebrae, a series of readings of the last events of Jesus’ life accompanied by the extinguishing of candles. Maundy comes from the Latin word for commandments as Jesus leaves his disciples with his new commandment, “You are to love one another.”
