God, thank you for:
1. The beauty of the snow,
2. The ability to shovel so much heavy snow,
3. A warm office,
4. This cup of coffee mixed with hot chocolate,
5. And, good friends and family with which to share the snow.
It is the season of gratitude here at CCH. I am trying. It would have been harder if we were giving up complaining again. This snow storm is severely testing my good will. I need an attitude adjustment, and counting my blessings is just what the minister ordered.
In case you haven’t heard yet, our theme for Lent is gratitude. Each Sunday during Lent I’m going to preach a sermon on thankfulness that will include a practice designed to increase our gratefulness. This past Sunday I introduced the topic and we gave everyone a small gratitude journal. The assignment is to write down five things that you are grateful for each day. If you weren’t in church last week we have plenty of journals, so pick one up on Sunday.
I am thankful for this gratitude practice. It is too easy, especially when things don’t work out the way I want, to spiral down into complaining and discouragement. Intentionally thinking about what I am grateful for changes my complete frame of mind.
This coming Sunday I’ll be preaching on ingratitude. There are a lot of reasons why people resist gratitude. To be ungrateful is also a decision that we may make in our lives. Sunday we’ll uncover why, and learn how the denial of gratitude may negatively impact our lives.
