One of the central attributes of our church is our quality music program. This has been a point of pride for this congregation since we were founded. The past six years this tradition has been continued and expanded upon by our director of music Peter Lakes. Peter has done a tremendous job enlarging our choir and broadening the variety of music in worship.
Peter has now decided to resign as our music director in order to have more free time in his life. His work at the school and his new marriage are priorities for him and he has made the difficult decision to cut back in his other obligations. His last Sunday will August 24. We are going to miss him dearly. Personally, I have valued Peter as a colleague and a friend. It has been fun to work with him in planning worship, and I have grown as he has introduced me to new music.
We are in the process of forming a search committee to find our new music director. The committee will include members of our music committee as well as representatives from the congregation. For the interim we have hired Sabine Gardner to direct the choir and play the organ for the month of September. The choir will begin rehearsals on Thursday, September 4 and their first Sunday singing in worship will be September 14. We have already begun to advertise the position with the American Guild of Organists, the Long Island Council of Churches and the Stony Brook music department. One of the best sources of candidates is word of mouth, so be sure to spread the word of our need to any choir directors or organists you may know.
I am confident that our congregation’s history and strengths in music will be attractive to interested candidate and we will fill the position with someone who will help to move our program forward. In the meantime I ask for your support and understanding as we work through the interim period. I particularly appreciate the dedication of our choir and know that the new season will begin as seamlessly as possible.
