A Time to Grieve

Our prayers this week turn to Virginia Tech. It has been hard to write about it as it seems so overwhelming. It is particularly poignant for me as today is the anniversary of the shooting at Columbine High School, my alma mater.

This tragedy affects so many people. The grief for the parents of those slain is unimaginable. Also the friends, fellow students, alumni, and, really, everyone can identify with this awful event.

I don’t have any profound thoughts and am seeking to try to let the sense-making seep in slowly. During the immediate aftermath it is only the time for grief, to let the pain be what it is for the time being. Too often we rush too fast to try to understand or find solutions, or construct barriers to try to make us all safer—there is time for all of this. As Ecclesiastes said, “there is a time for every matter under heaven.†I have found that with grief we often make the biggest mistakes, or do ourselves real harm, when we try to do, when our bodies and souls require not action, but silent reflection and gentle be-ing with each other.

This Sunday has been planned as a celebration of Earth Day. I decided to keep the basic theme, but will also be spending time in the service for us to offer our prayers for all the people who are affected by this tragedy. Please join me as we offer our prayers for all those affected.

Program Notes:

New Member Class: Following worship on Sunday I will lead a class on our church and faith. This is provided as an introduction to people who are considering joining our church, but is open to all who wish to join us. It will be in the large downstairs classroom.

Family CPR class: Jen McRae is offering a “Family and Friends CPR†course at our church. Learning the basics of CPR is one way you may really save a life someday. This is particularly important with parents to learn to protect their children. Jen will hold the one-session class three different times. The first is this Sunday, from 11:15-1:30 and will be repeated on Monday, April 23, 7-9:15, and Sunday, April 29, from 1-3:15 PM. There is a $25 fee for the course and all monies collected will be used to renovate the Angel’s Nest. If you want to attend this Sunday’s class be sure to call the church office by Friday afternoon or send me an email.

Pilgrim Fellowship and Confirmation: This Sunday the Confirmation class will meet at 5:00, and the PF at 6:00. This PF meeting is the only time the youth have to prepare for youth Sunday—so everyone who wants to participate in the April 29 service should attend this meeting.
