Laughs Needed

One of the occupational hazards of the ministry is sensibility and sincerity. We ministers can be much too serious. I suppose it comes from doing important things all the time, like worship, and funerals, and hospital visits. Though, to be honest I should speak for myself—I find myself to be much to sober, perhaps even somber much of the time. I can only imagine what other people think.

I’m thinking about this because of a very funny and highly irreverent video I watched on line. I’ve mentioned before that I like to read the “Real Live Preacher†blog. Today he has posted a video of himself test tasting communion wafers. (If you want to see it go to Warning: it is not for everybody.) I think it is hilarious. I may just like it for shock value of someone actually munching down on communion wafers, but I find the deadpan delivery is right on.

To be honest I don’t think it is just me who is too serious. It may be an ailment for church people in general. What do you think?

I don’t believe that God wants us to be serious all the time. Why create people who can laugh if they shouldn’t use it? I’m told the Bible even has some funny stuff in it, but you can only see the humor if you are a first-century Palestinian.

I’m not sure where I’m going with this, except to say that I am trying to lighten up. I’m looking to you for help. As a member of the church you see me a lot. Tell me some jokes. Let me know when my sermon is funny, perhaps laugh out loud sometime if it is deserving.

Anyway, that is what is on my mind today.
