Happy 50th CCH!
by Pastor Mark
This Sunday is a truly historic day (it is not often that I can say that). On Sunday morning we will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the first worship service of The Congregational Church of Huntington, United Church of Christ. On December 4, 1955 a group of Congregationalists held a worship service at the Huntington YMCA in order to judge the possibility of starting a new church. Within two weeks they had invited the Rev. Robert Balfe to preach for them as minister for this new church start. After worship they held a meeting and voted to call him as the founding pastor. By the end of January they had selected a parsonage for their new minister and family. This is quick action for a bunch of church-folk!
To honor the 50th birthday of our church we have planned a yearlong celebration. This will include the choir and bells concert on December 11, opening the time capsule at our annual meeting on January 22, a birthday banquet on April 29, a welcome back worship service on April 30 (including sealing the new time capsule), and a closing worship featuring the President of the UCC on December 3, 2006.
Fifty years is a significant percentage of a person’s life, but may be only the beginning of a church’s life. In some ways CCH is but a teenager. We’re still trying to complete the building (have you seen the sanctuary basement). In other ways we are a mature congregation with a significant ministry to the town of Huntington.
This Sunday we will celebrate in several forms. Our communion service will include the unveiling of the 50th anniversary banner to which many of us have contributed squares. We will also be distributing our new pictorial directory and the recently printed 50th Anniversary History, written by Liz North. Following worship the membership committee has a special coffee hour planned for us.
Sunday is also the day of our annual Advent Party, at 4:00. There will be ornament making for children, centerpiece construction for adults and a spaghetti dinner for everyone. The Pilgrim Fellowship is serving the spaghetti as a fund-raiser for their upcoming workcamp. The cost of dinner is $6 for adults, $3 for children and a maximum of $15 per family.
Our 50th anniversary celebration continues with a concert by our Chancel Choir and Bell Choir on Sunday, December 11, at 4:00. Be sure to invite your friends for a time of great music and fun. The choir is also requesting donations of baked goods for the reception to follow. Let me know if you can contribute.
See you in church,
v The Annual Community Messiah Sing-A-Long will be at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Cold Spring Harbor, on December 12, at 8:00 PM.
v HIHI Program:
We need volunteers for the morning shift this Sunday. It is to serve breakfast and do cleanup at 6:30 AM at St. Patrick’s Church in Huntington.
Also, we are consistently short-handed at the HIHI program. If you are interested in volunteering, please speak with Anne Canadeo, or myself, on Sunday.
v Christmas Phone Cards: We are collecting money to purchase phone cards for the HIHI guests to give them on Christmas morning. Talk to Anne Canadeo or Annie McClintock to assist.
v Christmas Gift Tree: Beginning December 4 we will have a tree with suggested gift items for the Huntington Holiday Gift Boutique. Pick a star and return the gift. The gifts should be new and unwrapped as this program allows low-income parents to go to the boutique and select presents for their children.
v Christmas Pageant: The casting for the Christmas Pageant is Sunday, December 4, following worship. All youth members are encouraged to participate.
