Summer is a time for many people to travel. And that means it is a time for the collection of souvenirs. We bring back mementos to remind us of places we have been and, hopefully, to reignite in us the feelings we had during our travels. My souvenirs usually just consist of the pictures I take and occasionally some food that I enjoyed on the trip. (Though there was a time I drove back from Colorado with a 20 pound rock in my car.) In a way we are attempting to keep a connection to the experiences we have had there.
This summer could you bring a souvenir to church with you? You don't even have to travel far, perhaps something from the beach, or from your yard. This summer's worship theme, "Grow the Spirit" is a celebration of all the ways we encounter God's spirit in our lives. For some people this is on a quiet walk, for others while reading a book, and for some it is through relationships. Whatever, or wherever, you feel God's presence can you bring a memento from the place with you to church? We will be creating a display of all the spiritual souvenirs on our communion table this summer. By so doing we may share the spiritual experiences that we have had. You might consider a rock or shell from a trip, or a picture of some friends, or maybe a symbol of volunteer service or social justice action in which you participated. We hope that through these spiritual momentos we may all connect with the spiritual experiences of each other.
See you in church,
