Advent Begins

One of the best parts of being in a church is the variety of events. This next week is a great example of the range of topics and activities in which one may participate. From family fun at the Advent party to praying for an end to gun violence, our church tries to enagage our members to build relationships and also, as a congregation, to work for justice and peace in the world.

Sunday's Advent Party is one of our longest traditions in the church. It begins at 4:00 PM with craft-making: ornament projects for children and Christmas centerpiece making for adults. Be sure to bring some cut greens with you (good time to trim bushes) and a pair of gardening shears. After the crafts there will be a concert by our bell choir and then a pasta dinner served by the youth of the church.

On Wednesday we have a very different event as we will be holding a prayer vigil as part of the #EndGunViolence events being held nationwide. It all centers on a service at the national cathedral in Washington DC. We are the only Long Island event connected to it, that I know of. The service will be from 7:30-8:15 PM. I hope you can join us.

Advent is a season that encompasses the extremes of human behavior. From the angry prophets to the joyful promise of angels. From the gifts of King and a dirty manger. From a miraculous birth to the murder of innocents. By engaging in the season and its stories we can fully prepare for the birth of Christ in our lives.

See you in church,
Pastor Mark

Yoga offers many positive benefits to the body, mind and spirit through the practice of meditation and mindfulness. As another busy holiday season approaches, yoga can help us find the balance we all  seek. The class is $20.00 per session. Pastor's Book Group

The Pastor's Book Group will not meet in December, but we have picked a lovely novel to read for the holiday season. Many of you will remember “The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry” that we read almost four years ago. Our January book is the sequel, “The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy,” in which the author, Rachel Joyce, has written a poignant parallel story to Harold’s saga.

We will meet on Wednesday, January 24, for our next group discussion.

 From the publisher:

In this, acclaimed author Rachel Joyce brings Queenie Hennessy’s voice into sharp focus. Setting pen to paper, Queenie makes a journey of her own, a journey that is even bigger than Harold’s; one word after another, she promises to confess long-buried truths—about her modest childhood, her studies at Oxford, the heartbreak that brought her to Kingsbridge and to loving Harold, her friendship with his son, the solace she has found in a garden by the sea. And, finally, the devastating secret she has kept from Harold for all these years.

A wise, tender, layered novel that gathers tremendous emotional force, The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy underscores the resilience of the human spirit, beautifully illuminating the small yet pivotal moments that can change a person’s life.

Peace and Plenty Food Outreach:  You are invited to help make sandwiches and prepare snacks for children in Huntington. Peace and Plenty will meets on Mondays at 6:30 PM. They are also in need of donations of lunch meats and cheeses, fruit and healthy snacks.

Cooks Needed for the Peace & Plenty program
We're looking for a few volunteers who can help us send the Tri CYA trays of
cooked food such as baked ziti, chicken and rice, pasta with meatballs or meat sauce, etc. Most children at the Tri CYA receive free breakfast and lunch at school during the school year and rely on the Tri CYA  for at least one nutritious meal.
